A Show of Portraits

Curated by Trevor Slowinski

REFRACTION is a show of portraits and people. The word itself refers to the warping of light passed through a transparent medium, such as a glass. The same occurs with the face and the eye.

When a face is viewed, multiple versions coexist: the face as imagined by its bearer, as seen by the viewer, and if rendered in art, as viewed by the artist and depicted in their work. An instance of refraction occurs during a portrait’s creation. The painter or photographer carefully balances their visual style with their real observations, reshaping the face in the process.

We invite viewers to consider how their experience and perception influences their viewing of these works.
